In which I argue that a deal is desirable and possible, and aided by the @SKinnock amendment to the Benn Act. The great prize is the transition period, which the EU ought to make flexibly extendable to obviate the need ever to use the Irish backstop. 1/
Stormont could be given a seat on the Joint Committee. And the Political Declaration, which is causing trouble, should be ditched entirely. The EU 27 has emerged stronger from the Brexit process, is fed up with the British, and may very well not grant an extension at all. 2/
Article 50 has worked well for the EU. Now it's high time to move on to negotiate the new form of association with the UK. Some day the British will consider re-joining. But that will only be feasible if the Commons is elected by proportional representation. END/

In which I rehearse the continuing argument for the Withdrawal Agreement as the only safe way out of the Brexit shambles, and urge the Brits to pay more attention to the jointness of the proposed post-Brexit governance arrangements. 1/
And instead of seeking a further extension of the Article 50 process (which #EUCO is unlikely to grant), the UK should seek to extend the transition period until the entry into force of the final association agreement. This requires the EU to amend the Withdrawal Agreement. 2/
Prolonging the transition period would allow the Brits to make up for wasted time, avoid a legal hiatus, obviate the need to use the Irish backstop, minimise economic disruption and eliminate hairy crisis summit meetings. 3/

THREAD. Brussels is less interested in process than in outcome. Any proposal from London for a bespoke UK deal must be clear, internally coherent & negotiable with the EU. It also needs to be capable of being wrapped up in a revised Political Declaration well before 12 April. 1/
While the options of no deal, May’s deal and revocation of Article 50 are easy to draft, other options less so. Use of shorthand ‘Canada’, ‘Norway’ etc is misleading. A minimalistic FTA creates more problems than it solves. Full customs union membership is very constraining. 2/
Best deal involves (a) UK-wide customs accord that obviates use of Irish backstop; (b) softer line on mobility of persons allowing better access to trade in services; (c) closer regulatory alignment leading to participation in EU agencies; (d) upgrading of PD’s legal status. 3/
