I was outside the Supreme Court yesterday late afternoon when @thatginamiller emerged. The atmosphere changed immediately; there was a sudden, focused and visceral hatred. /1
I was not there when - the much less well known - Shami Chakrabarti emerged. But I am told her appearance drew much the same response. Other, white, anti-Brexit campaigners (Joanna Cherry, me) experienced nothing like this. /2
All you can do with this information is recognise the far heavier price that BAME women pay to be in this space. Props to them. /4
I wish I didn't need to say this but I do. It is wrong and offensive to generalise about Leavers being racist. The many who are not are not responsible for - and have no obligation to apologise for - those who are. We should all know what damage that type of talk does. /ENDS
