Arlene Foster has said that she hopes it is possible to have Northern Ireland-specific arrangements after Brexit that do not affect the North's constitutional position. Story up shortly on Irishtimes.com
Suggests, I think, that some movement from DUP is possible not insisting that North has to have exactly the same Brexit as rest of UK
Still firmly ruling out existing backstop as unconstitutional but says that the DUP is not "a no-deal party"

@DUPleader @Andrew_Adonis @theresa_may Adds that all of the three things borders exist for - tarrifs, regulations, movement of people - none of them apply because of EU membership. All apply when we leave.

Backstop only became controversial when @DUPleader Arlene Foster objected to it. /3

Howsabout a 4 slide summary from @DPhinnemore & me setting out what we can be pretty sure of and what the UK/EU (dis)agree on - as viewed from Northern Ireland.

1st: a lack of progress on the Protocol on NI/IRL in the draft Withdrawal Agmt.
All these colours have to turn green (i.e. agreed in principle & text) before we get that Deal for exit day next March.

Note that red circle - backstop is intended to be trumped at some point.

The Protocol is intended as ‘insurance’ in case a future UK-EU agreement is insufficient to meet the commitments made in the Joint Report bit.ly/2Bgjvj6. In that sense it is *already* conditional & envisaged as temporary.
It is a backstop, not a precursor.

The Protocol is the EU showing most flexibility (cherrypicking) *for* Northern Ireland in the very areas that the UK is finding hard to swallow, i.e. NI being in a Common Regulatory Area and the Customs Territory of the EU.

How many times does it have to be said? Ireland is not threatening to use its veto because Ireland doesn't have to use its veto. Ireland IS the EU; the EU is Ireland. The UK's entire #Brexit strategy seems to miss this fundamental point time and time again.

I'm currently at this #Brexit conference in Copenhagen, where the British ambassador and several #DExEU officials will be on panels with representatives of Danish trade and security. It'll be very interesting to see what's said, especially in light of May's recent Munich speech.
And now that I'm not desperately trying to keep up with livetweeting it, I shall turn my mess of self-retweets into a proper thread. #Brexit #BrexitDK
