Mark may also be interesting in visiting the DC Attorney General who is waiting patiently on Facebook to provide discovery for their Cambridge Analytica case moving forward and has a hearing on October 2. /2
It’s worth noting Zuckerberg can’t visit Canada, United Kingdom and won’t visit Dublin but will visit DC because our government allowed him to provide misleading testimony before facts were even understood or reported. And our regulators didn’t depose him. /3

Yo @brianstelter @oliverdarcy, it’s an interesting point. We’ve also seen this with Facebook pumping out controlled blog posts / background statements to show large #s cleanup. Is press being used as a tool of their PR depts with little ability to get answers to tough questions?
This is similar to when Facebook simply posts that they purged 500 gazillion fake accounts but meanwhile never provided academics access or any real details on past purges that looked entirely suspect.
To be clear, intent is not to criticize CNN here or any of the many news orgs who run with either companies press by blog post. Copying you as it seems like a reasonable question and you follow these things closely.

Justin, I don’t know you and I’m sure your intentions are good (people tell me this) but I have to say Google posting this embarrassing 3 pg summary of dubious research to back up a business-driven decision likely forced on browser is fairly ridiculous. 5 days later in footnote.
I wrote in 2014 why that Beales study wasn’t informative to publisher strategy putting aside the source of data. Acquisti and Marotta took many years to empirically study on how welfare may actually shift using many legit publishers. adage.com/article/datadr…
No one is more aligned and interested in informative results on publisher impact that me and the many small and large trusted publishers (1,000s of published brands) across our organization. Bottom-line the research, rollout of this by Google was very disappointing.

However, I think that misses unique role of social media which often accelerates providing reach and velocity for problematic, harmful material thru the content it creates to drive up engagement. We know approaching 80% of YouTube engagement comes from their recommendations? /2
So I question the panel suggesting politicians have different issues with CDA230. If you step up a level, I think you'll find common concern as to responsibility over their algorithms. It's either a liability issue or an antitrust issue or both. It's dangerous if it's neither? /3

So let’s start w/ the good news. One year in, 150k privacy complaints have been made under Europe’s #privacy rules, a marked increase vs previous years. But (and it’s a big but) very few companies have been fined, most notably @google in France w/ its €50m penalty
That doesn’t mean fines = success. It’s fair to say that companies now take data protection more seriously, and that national EU regulators *are* building cases against potential abuse.

Do not. Do not. DO. NOT. agree to a facial recognition scan at any airport in the United States or Europe. It is a violation of privacy laws in the US and no law in the EEA requires you to. Do NOT just listen to the @TSA, @Delta, @JetBlue, etc agent telling you to.

They will not tell you it's optional. They will not tell you it's against existing privacy laws. They will not tell you that your face scan is sent to the same US agency that cages thousands of children without charges permanently.

They will not tell you that they have ZERO authority to try to make you. They will not produce a privacy policy on demand. They will not cite a law or policy directive that empowers them to request it. They may offer you a link to a policy buried somewhere no one could find.

Another day at the palace means another day to conform to their standards. This was never how Joohyun wanted to live her life. Paparazzis everywhere and everyone updating on her life. The only way to keep them out was to be cold towards them.
The highlight of her everyday was helping out in the orphanage run by nuns in the outskirts of the city. Where she goes by the name ‘Irene’.

It is where she becomes herself without the worry of people following her every move.
