A #ClimateStrike poem for our kids.

Grandpa I Can't Breathe
____________________________________

This morning I flew to Dallas, to see my son and his wife Alice,
and to hold my grandson for the very first time.
When I laid my eyes on that young child, I recognized a face I hadn't seen in a while, but one I had seen hundreds of times before.

In dreams I had many years ago, I'm holding a child I did not know, but It's a child I that obviously loved.
His face is pale and his chest is heaving, his arms extended, his tears are streaming & I hear him whisper Grandpa I can't breathe.

Over and over I watched him die, with no breath in him left to cry, his mouth is open as he stared straight up at me.
In my dream I see a darkened sky, the filthy air, it burns my eyes, and around me all I sense is pain and fear.

Back then I did not realize that the child I held had my eyes, and that my choices had contributed to my grandson's death.
Now I hold this precious child, that fate had so generously allowed, and I wondered to myself, will my nightmares come true.

Selfish decisions made by us today, are made for us, but our kids will pay, and that isn't fair, but that's the way it is.
We must be determined to make better choices, join together and combine our voices, to protect our world, so our kids can breathe free.
