Years ago in a rural parish where I served as the priest in charge a mother brought her young daughter to me with a strange complaint. The mother’s right eye was swollen and dripping and she accused her daughter of being responsible. I thought the 6-8 year old girl had hit the
mum with something but I soon realized it was something supernatural . I asked the mum to leave the girl with me while I interacted with her. I gave her snacks, soda, egg and gained her confidence. ‘So why did you do it ?’ I asked her. Plainly she told me that while other
Kids all went to school her mum insisted she stay back home to assist her so she had to punish the mum with the help of her friends. They did it while the mum was asleep, supernaturally! I became all serious and threatened that if her mum’s eye wasn’t healed the next day I
would deal with her. Frankly I didn’t even know how I was going to do it but I sounded dead serious enough. She agreed to do it but told me she would have to appease her friends with six cups of rice. She was very specific. 6 cups. I told her I would give her the six cups of rice
‘So how will you carry the rice down there’ I asked. For a child, the surprising answer could be translated as ‘I will carry it in the spirit’. I was amazed. ‘So will there be any rice remaining in the here since you are carrying it in the spirit ?’ I asked her. She responded
in the affirmative. ‘How much rice will remain here physically ?’ I asked her. ‘Six cups will remain here’ she said. ‘But you are carrying six cups why should six cups remain here?’ I pressed on. She looked at me as if dismayed at my apparent poor understanding. ‘Bc I am carrying
it in the spirit!’ Hmmm. To cut a long story short, I did give her the rice and the mother’s eye did get considerably better the next day. I did my best to pray for the little girl. I made sure the mum sent her to school. Until I left she still had that supernatural power tho
I heard she was delivered later. But it did strike me that sometimes the evil one understands the spiritual realities we teach people much better. It struck me for instance about what the Catholic Church teaches about TRANSUBSTANTIATION - the belief that during Holy Mass where
bread and wine are consecrated, what makes bread bread and what makes wine wine do change to become the Body and Blood of Christ. What we see, smell, taste, feel as bread and wine truly change and there is no more bread and no more wine bc they have become Christ’s Body n Blood
bc the ‘soul’ or substance of the material has changed! The experience also affirmed for me the fact that the gifts we offer to God, God actually receives them. We may not see them disappear from our sight but certainly God receives his gifts. Human beings could take advantage
and exploit those who are vulnerable but a true gift given to God is received by God
