Impeachment is a political act. As I’ve long written, part of the reason it hasn’t been used is no one knows what obstruction of justice is and nobody cares. It doesn’t put money in the bank.
Bribing a foreign power to crush a political opponent is not only near the limit, it’s also easy to understand. Most but the worst clowns, the nihilists, know that’s wrong.
If you impeach you almost certainly lose, and there is still an argument as to what it would do to the election. But there is a political rationale that goes down better.
Impeachment is a terrible thing to apply. You may achieve a desired result but things don’t heal. The body changes, as it were. People have obstructed justice before and they will again, so far as it’s possible to prove that act.
But the new accusation is so beyond the pale that it’s fair to ask if you hold back on impeachment, do you neuter it forever?
Pelosi is correct the public should be ready. The public is also never going to be ready. Sometimes in our system the right choice in the present kills you 15 years later.
