Scoop: A firm linked to Joe Biden tested messages to undercut support for Medicare for All among Democrats. Here’s what it found to be effective, and ineffective, at persuading 2020 primary voters.

Centrist Democrats are circulating a poll that shows voters souring on Medicare for All after hearing arguments against it. Commissioned by @ThirdWayTweet, which fears it’s a political loser in a general election.

Third Way/ALG poll finds that the most effective ways to turn Democrats against Medicare for All are to argue that it’ll require steep tax hikes, threaten seniors’ care and lengthen wait times.

This poll also tested positive messages for Medicare for All.

The ones that were particularly effective among Dems: 1) U.S. must join the developed world in making health care a right, and 2) It’d eliminate premiums and out-of-pocket medical costs.

White voters without a college degree

...voted Romney 61-36% in ‘12.

...voted Trump 66-29% in ‘16.

...voted Republican 61-37% in ‘18.

That any Democrat could make meaningful gains with this group in 2020 is an arbitrary assumption that requires serious evaluation.
Meanwhile, 100 million eligible voters didn’t turn out in 2016 (disproportionately non-white/young i.e. Dem-leaning) and college-educated whites are suddenly Democrat-curious. There are paths to a Trump defeat that don’t require flipping white working class votes.
Seen a lot of this reply so I'll be clearer. Small swings obviously matter in a close election. My point is 1) To question whether flipping white non-college whites is more viable vs. Trump than moving white college grads and/or boosting non-white turnout.

@BW There is a false narrative on the left that the tea party was simply an astroturf operation by the Kochs et al. It had wealthy funders, sure, but the movement also had real grassroots power — it just had little to do with the deficit.
@BW The leaders of the movement seem to recognize this. Here, for instance, are the official statements from Tea Party Patriots since spring — no criticism of Trump as deficits soar to $1 trillion (contrast with their attitude to Obama).

The most crucial point in Marcotte's exegesis is that #Biden has always stood up for right wing Catholics and evangelicals over women on repro rights and she outlines specific instances including as VP that are quite disturbing.

And it IS telling that the small percentage of pro-#Biden poll numbers among women are all post-menopausal age. Which is cringeworthy when you think about it. Choice has to be protected for all women and girls. So as Marcotte notes, the nominee must be all in for women.
