@BW There is a false narrative on the left that the tea party was simply an astroturf operation by the Kochs et al. It had wealthy funders, sure, but the movement also had real grassroots power — it just had little to do with the deficit.
@BW The leaders of the movement seem to recognize this. Here, for instance, are the official statements from Tea Party Patriots since spring — no criticism of Trump as deficits soar to $1 trillion (contrast with their attitude to Obama).

I’m gonna keep saying this because it’s so poorly understood: Since 1981 the deficit has grown under every Republican president and shrunk under every Democratic president.
Donald Trump isn’t an aberration from Republican orthodoxy on fiscal matters; he’s following in the tradition of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush by boosting deficits via tax cuts and more military money.

Was thinking about what makes Beto O'Rourke such an impressive candidate; what's the quality behind the intangible "it" that he possesses, other than the undeniable charisma and sense of innate goodness and decency that makes people gravitate towards him?
It occurred to me that as Beto's campaign for president has played out, with his "go everywhere, engage everyone" philosophy, and in particular the events that have unfolded after El Paso, Beto has taken on the stance of less a candidate and more that of an advocate and activist.
Well, you might say, what's the difference, don't all candidates at one point or another advocate for various issues and to create change? The answer is yes, but I don't think we've seen it yet at the level that Beto has reached and certainly not with his kind of authenticity.

As I first wrote several weeks ago would happen, the Democratic debates have restructured the polling, putting, as I predicted, @KamalaHarris and @ewarren within striking distance of @JoeBiden.

Biden 22%
Harris 17%
Warren 15%
Sanders 14%
Buttigieg 4%

Months of assertions that #Biden was "inevitable" have been eviscerated. Unable to stand up to #Harris at the debates, Biden appeared tired, confused and unprepared, despite having been kept away from major events for weeks by his handlers. Harris has been campaigning daily.
#Warren won the first debate handily, with only @JulianCastro and @CoryBooker offering any other strong moments in the two hour debate.
The new rankings put #Harris and Warren in the lead for most electable and many are already talking about Harris/Warren as the 2020 ticket.
