Undercover stings against #sexworkers are acts of state sexual violence. While the loss of Yang Song should make no one question the truth of that, unsurprisingly there is so much pushback on the idea, so I wanted to organize my thoughts in a thread (1/12) documentedny.com/2018/11/26/one…
It's intimate physical contact through fraud. That's sexual violence. Think about what it's like to then have to sit with the cop you gave a blow job to who then arrested you. What about when you're giving info on your experience of trafficking? (2/12) ydr.com/story/news/wat…
Many police departments don't ban sexual contact during sting operations (see above) - when states have tried to ban the practice, police have pushed back and said it was necessary to, you know, sexual violate people in the course of policing cbsnews.com/news/hawaii-la… (3/12)
If someone DOES know that they are with an undercover - just think of the mental gymnastics of absolute terror. Think about being in a dungeon in a state where BDSM is in a grey area (many). Do you do what they want? Do you not when you don't know what's illegal? (4/12)
Also, vice departments can attract people looking to exploit that kind of power. Law enforcement extorting sex from sex workers is, sadly, common. (5/12) dcist.com/story/19/08/14…
And we cannot forget the loss of Donna Dalton, a mother whose favorite colors were black and pink, where a serial sexual predator took her life for resisting sexual violence. Rest in power, Donna. (6/12) theappeal.org/columbus-offic…
The extortion of sex by law enforcement even been noted by the Department of Justice in cities like Baltimore as a rampant problem. (7/12) slate.com/human-interest…
Additionally, if you're in a place where you know they do undercover stings - if someone wants to commit sexual violence, they frequently pretend to be undercovers. (8/12) thinkprogress.org/men-impersonat…
When I said this to a cop, her response was that you have to show lots of documentation to prove you're an undercover. As if your instinct when someone says "blow job or else I'll arrest you" is "I'm sorry, I'll need extensive documentation, whatever that looks like" (9/12)
Also, even if there is just negotiation for sexual services, it's a process of sexual humiliation which leads to the violence of arrest. Arrest is violence. Incarceration is violence. It's non-consensual physical restraint that fucks up your life. (10/12)
And the thing no one else is saying: negotiating intimate sexual details with a fraudulent person leading to exposure and arrest - it's sexual humiliation. So doing this to clients is premised on also about how we don't care about that kind of experience for men. (11/12)
And lastly it tells everyone in the sex trade: cops lie. Cops are not to be trusted. Cops lie to force you to comply to their will. If nothing else, starting any kind of "intervention" by lying to someone who may be victimized through deception? COME ON. Blathering over. (12/12)
