No one has stolen this kids dreams. Yes we need to consider the downside of consumerism and post agriculture civilisation in general. But for a 16 year old to kinda insinuate this time is one of the worst to be alive is ridiculous!!
This is the best time to be alive. We have the kind of material and psychological benefits and help that we could never imagine. And sorry to break it to all of these kids, the solution to this will also come from consumerism and the markets. Shouting & screaming won't solve it.
The key problem is do other nations deserve all the good things life brings or not? Do developing nations sacrifice because now the West has a new issue? I agree with the concern by the way, but what I'm asking is what is the solution. Why don't these kids support nuclear energy?
The real solution lies is honest discussions where developing nations also get the fruits of economic growth while we figure out how to deal with climate change. And all this shouting is always done by the privileged variety that don't have to worry about their meals on the table
You want to test that kid and all such kids? Make them stay in a Mumbai slum for 3 months. I've spent hours in those slums, I repeat hours. And let me tell you those people deserve the good stuff as much as we do. So give me a f%$king break.
To say we are not working towards climate change is rubbish. In my own industry emission norms have been made far more stringent. Everywhere we are making improvements. Could the speed be faster? Yes I'll concede that. But we could have a major impact with nuclear energy.
At my own personal level small things matter
1. I used to put my air conditioning temp at 20. I realised I was wrong. Now for almost 12 years I don't set below 25 deg Celsius. And we switch it off and put the fan on after a while. I did not do it because a 16 year old screamed.
And FYI I can afford the electricity bill. But I still don't do it.
2. I try to walk to all the spots which take me 20 minutes via walking. Yes before I'd drive to get everything. We change when we get what is happening around us. Don't need a 16 year old screaming at us.
3. My wife always carries her shopping bag from our house even before the plastic ban by the government. We did not put f%$king selfies here. Heck even with food deliveries at home we give the plastic bag back to them. We're doing this for a decade+
4. We have always segregated our waste. I don't even remember the time for that. Maybe the West has suddenly woken up to this. But for me and my extended family and friends living a minimalist lifestyle has always been the freaking norm. Our parents raised us that way.
I will fight for responsible consumerism and conscious capitalism till the last breath in my body. All these lofty lines used by screaming 16 year olds will not sway me away. The only way the millions of my fellow countrymen will come out of poverty is consumerism.
And how dare these rich entitled brats rob my fellow countrymen of their right to have a good life? Sala tumne maje kar liye aur hum bus jhopdi mein sadke mar jaaye?
& to all of you who blame the corporates for climate change. How about this you suckers, 1st quit your cushy corporate jobs. Why are you part of that evil pollution creating system? Don't partake in evil kids!!! Go live in that slum glorified in Slumdog Millionaire. Try it once.
Get all the good things in life personally through these very corporates. Apply for jobs in those places. & then tell other poor people to suffer in poverty all their life. I mean how evil & selfish are you really? Yes I'm pissed because I hate seeing people suffer from poverty.
All this is what I call fluffy BS philosophy. Like that old uncle who tells you "son money isn't everything ". Yeah right uncle gimme all your money then. Most of these jackasses will take corporate jobs & then call corporates evil. Don't take those jobs then. Live like Buddha.
I still remember my 1st whole day in a slum. I could not sleep that night. The whole time I was telling myself "how can they live like that, this is so unfair". That is why I support consumerism & capitalism. Because that is the only long term solution that'll bring them out.
So pardon me if I get angry when people give suggestions that'll ensure my countrymen stay poor forever.
