Seriously cool -- @theintercept has organized and put into a collection all of the stories we've published that are based on NSA documents from the Snowden archive -- 114 in all. It's wildly impressive, I think. theintercept.com/collections/sn…
@theintercept It has been a team effort -- look at the number of bylines on these 114 stories. And far more people were involved as editors, researchers, security, archiving, lawyers. An educated guess -- no other news organization has done such deep work on Snowden documents in recent years.
@theintercept I played a very small role. That's not false modesty -- I wrote just seven stories based on the Snowden documents, and helped edit a few. Most of my stories were features about people and issues that the NSA documents revealed; they weren't technical stories.
@theintercept I suppose my favorite piece was about the NSA's philosopher of surveillance -- an analyst who had been an unsuccessful writer before joining the agency, then became a columnist on surveillance ethics for its in-house newsletter, called SIDtoday. theintercept.com/2015/08/11/sur…
@theintercept I also wrote about one of the NSA's top hackers, a guy who had authored a series of classified memos about breaking into foreign computer systems. He had recently left the agency and agreed to talk, so long as I didn't use his name. It was wild. theintercept.com/2016/06/28/he-…
@theintercept If there's a prize for funniest story on the NSA, I'm in the running. In 2014 I wrote about the agency's advice column. It was called "Ask Zelda" and the questions Zelda answered included (irony alert) one about a boss snooping on employees at the agency. theintercept.com/2014/03/07/nsa…
@theintercept Enough about me for now. Some of the stories published by @theintercept are flat-out stunning -- i.e. what they disclosed and the journalism itself. Read, for instance, this story by @rj_gallagher and @moltke about the NSA's secret spy hubs in America. theintercept.com/2018/06/25/att…
@theintercept @rj_gallagher @moltke Ryan and Henrik also joined forces on this story about the NSA's hub in New York City. Make sure to watch the short doc, embedded in the story, that Henrik made with Laura Poitras. Haunting. theintercept.com/2016/11/16/the…
@theintercept @rj_gallagher @moltke And don't miss this story by @KimZetter about the downing of a U.S. Navy spy plane over China in 2001. Based on a secret NSA report, it reads like a thriller. theintercept.com/2017/04/10/sno…
