1. Several Cabinet ministers say mood of the conference call was just to move on, to get back to sorting out the political problems -official line and the PM's line is to respectfully disagree with the judgement but get on with trying to get over the next enormous hurdle
2. But some expressed more frustration with the court in line with No 10 source earlier - one Cab minister says “interesting for justices to be giving political direction"
3. Another source says Jacob Rees-Mogg described what happened as 'constitutional coup' - his team not denying tonight, but won't comment

remember for govt main thing today is really whether EU leaders say this is a load of claptrap, forget about it or ok, mmmm, maybe let's start talking
Govt sources say they've talked about these ideas and found some willingness to at least contemplate them with senior EU figures, including in Ireland, but the likelihood of them engaging with them has gone down since MPs passed the Benn Act
Might hear from Varadkar shortly - Ireland's reaction is the critical one

1st big conference speech by any new(ish) party leader is always a big occasion, but today is massive because Johnson using the platform to make his bid to the EU
We haven't seen final detail, and push back from No 10 at the Teleg's scoop on the plan - but seems a hybrid of a lot of the elements that have been around for the last while - at this stage doesn't seem that much of it is surprising
But,, it's a big question as to whether the combination of elements can get EU to the table in a meaningful way in next few days - David Frost, PM's EU negotiator in Brussels today

1. So... tomorrow, Johnson’s big pitch - his ‘new deal, or no deal’ - expect to see full legal text of the offer at some point in the day - who knows where things will be in 24 hours time
2. From what we know now seems v unlikely EU will agree (and there will be lots of argument on here about what is possible or not)
3. But... decision in next few days is not on whether there is a deal or not, but whether the two sides reckon it’s worth sitting down to talk properly at all

So @BorisJohnson says the backstop must go and he won’t bring @theresa_may deal back to Parliament.

As @tnewtondunn reported there’s now several cabinet ministers that want a deal. That includes some big beasts am told. Gove and Javid - though don’t know who the three he referenced were.

Understand that Frost been given leeway to go further on SPS and industrial goods, but that’s still piecemeal ‘slice n dice’ backstop. Won’t fly. Need to tackle customs. /3

Hello - I have opinions on Mark Harper - the Mr. Muscle of Cameron era Conservative Party politics, who does the jobs you hate, which I would like to share. (1/10)
I first became aware of Mark when I worked at the ERS and he was given the Constitution Brief in the relatively new Coalition government. This meant he was in the unenviable position of driving through Lords Reform, a Lib Dem priority. (2/10)
Obviously as a Tory this is possibly not the best career move, but he did it with upmost professionalism. I still have no idea whether he actually supported Lords Reform or not, but he was certainly energetic about pursuing it, and worked well with his then boss, Clegg. (3/10)

Worth making the point today that relatively arbitrary dates have not been the UK's friend in the Brexit process.

To start, A50 trigger in Mar 17 was created for Tory conference speech in Oct 16 - meant UK started clock without plan
Then the desire to get 'sufficient progress' in December 2017 meant there was a last minute scramble to agree words on Irish Border.

Supposedly Davis, Johnson and co didn't full understand what they had agreed (🤔)

But they've been critical driver of what followed
Then UK pushing extremely hard for deal at special summit in November 2018, to give them time to ratify...

But losing key cabinet ministers and adding to the big stand off with backbenchers...

2/ The Reform Act amended Section 49 of the Parliament of Canada Act. It requires MPs (and cabinet ministers) to vote 4 times at the first caucus meeting after a general election. These votes determine the power of the party leader (including the PM) and the power of MPs.
3/ On Nov. 5, 2015, the Liberal caucus met for the first time. At that meeting, the Liberal cabinet did NOT comply with Section 49 of the Parliament of Canada Act. In fact, the Liberal leadership encouraged the caucus NOT to comply with the law.
