Frustration levels boiling over. This claim that democracy will be betrayed unless we deliver the will of the people is deeply ingrained. It is also deeply flawed. Quick thread. 1/
In 2016, voters were given a binary choice. A majority voted to leave. Parliament retained control over the process. As a result a majority in Parliament is to determine whether and if so how to leave. 2/
Parliament's task since 2016 has been determine that very question. The referendum tells us that 52% of those who voted preferred leave over remain. It tells us nothing about how we should leave. 3/
On that question, leavers disagree. Some want Norway, some the WA, some no deal. Some want deals which are unattainable. 4/
All these options, and more, are still on the table. As a country, we have made next to no progress on the key question of how we should leave. That is a huge political failure. 5/
The reality today is that there is no concrete version of Brexit which has majority support. If that's right... there is no concrete version of Brexit which can be 'delivered' in a democratic way. 6/6
Two further thoughts.
We held the 'binary' referendum, and even triggered A50, without a plan, let alone a plan with public buy-in. The fact that we are now stuck should not surprise.

And when faced with this argument, ask people 'how should we leave?' And 'how, democratically, can we determine how best to leave?' (The referendum was completely silent on the 'how?' question.)
