On the (flawed) assumption that Johnson's plan is workable: how quickly is it possible to convert it into legal text, have that text agreed by the EU-27 (including national Parliaments) and the EP 1/2
... and scrutinised in the HoC, and passed, together with the necessary implementation act (the new version of the WAB)?

I'm old enough to remember when all sides were allowing 6 months post agreement for these processes... 2/2
Perhaps worth adding that during this time, on the UK side, the Govt will be proroguing Parliament in order to make time to prepare its Queen's Speech. While also determined to leave (ideally with a deal) on Oct 31. I'm sceptical.

I assume that this was just a bit of fun... but the article, and the responses on here, show the huge problem any 'GNU' initiative faces. Short thread. 1/
It simply isn't credible to seek to gather disparate MPs together (ignoring the main party leaders), to cobble together a majority, and to seek - legitimately - to settle Brexit. 2/
Think of the reaction of the c 40% of the electorate supporting Con/BP when they are faced with this GNU, and with the prospect of a WA v remain PV. It will (with justification) all be said to be an establishment stitch-up. 3/

Let me have another look at the options facing the opposition in relation to a possible Government of National Unity (GNU) or caretaker PM. Thread. 1/21 (sorry)
The opposition has to decide whether to replace PM Johnson; and if so, when to replace him; who will replace him; and what the new PM will do when in office. 2/
Many (myself included) think that they should act now. Some though would prefer to wait til late October, once Johnson has failed to get a new deal, and once he has been forced by the Benn Act to ask for an extension. 3/

1. So... tomorrow, Johnson’s big pitch - his ‘new deal, or no deal’ - expect to see full legal text of the offer at some point in the day - who knows where things will be in 24 hours time
2. From what we know now seems v unlikely EU will agree (and there will be lots of argument on here about what is possible or not)
3. But... decision in next few days is not on whether there is a deal or not, but whether the two sides reckon it’s worth sitting down to talk properly at all

Hearing many exaggerations these days. So, here an attempt to put things into perspective: (1) yes, (s)election of new #EU leadership involves power politics in #EP & #EUCO & between them, but that's how politics & democracy function – at all levels incl. #EU – get used to it;
(2) yes, #Spitzenkandidaten process not perfect, but it is here to stay although it needs to be reformed before 2024 #EP elections (incl. introduction of #TransnationalList) – 2019 experience should provide lessons to everyone (including European & national political parties);
(3) yes, #EP increasingly runs risk of being sidelined in leadership (s)election process, but majority in Parliament can still agree on common candidate for COM-P, who has a chance to be nominated by #EUCO;

1) In debate about renegotiating the text of the UK’s withdrawal agreement from EU it’s important to remember it’s a draft text not a final one but it’s been agreed by the cabinet and is result of 19 months of EU-U.K. negotiations. No appetite in EU to make fundamental changes
2) Merkel said to Bundestag: “We have a text agreed already between EU and U.K. That’s why for me, at the moment, there’s no question about whether we should continue to negotiate something.”
3) Note that she said “for now” . What I’m hearing is that EU intends to stick to this text till vote in Commons. If text is voted down, then EU open to “tweaks” but source close to Macron says “nothing fundamental”
