Van Harten was critical of more than just the FIPA with China that a CPC government negotiated. He also criticized TPP draft agreements. Trudeau negotiated the removal of punitive and lopsided investor protections.

Van Harten was relentless in his pursuit to warn the Canadian public. But we were oblivious to his warnings. Most Canadians still have no understanding of the FIPA and the restrictions it has on Canadian domestic sovereignty.
Every time journalists ask government MP’s & Ministers publicly about China’s imposed trade tariffs, China’s arrest and imprisonment of 2 Canadians, the strain in bilateral relations between China and Canada, or anything to do with China, they get an evasive response.
I’ve watched both Trudeau, Freeland and others skirt the questions and avoid commenting on dealings with China.
Why? Because if they make any breach of the confidentiality for China ratified in FIPA, severe punitive financial penalties can and will be applied.

The government is open and transparent about all other trade agreements, but not FIPA.
It’s the reason Trudeau refused to attend the Munk Debates sponsored foreign policy debate. Which was clearly an attempt to bait Trudeau into an event he could not fully participate in.

Currently the cancellation of this event is being used to smear the PM and political party. An underhanded set up to produce a fail for Trudeau, regardless of his decision to participate or not.
The malevolence of CPC remains undetected by most Canadians who remain blissfully unaware of the required confidentiality to protect Canadian taxpayers from paying punitive penalties for discussing China in any situation.
Harper and CPC tied every government’s hands behind its back and applied a gag order to preemptively prevent disclosure of their sale of Canada’s sovereignty, for the opportunity of Canadian domestic investors to profit from China’s investments in Canada.
And there are more of these trade agreements with confidentiality clauses that Harper and CPC negotiated. Saudi Arabia’s military procurement agreement includes a gag order and catastrophic penalties for withdrawal from the agreement.
Laura Dawson was quoted in 2014 stating up to 27 similar international trade agreements had been signed with other nations. She also conveniently minimized the risk Canadian taxpayers are under with these trade agreements negotiated under a CPC government. cbc.ca/radio/the180/c…
The Conservative Party of Canada sold Canadian sovereignty, our ability to self govern, for the opportunity of the wealthy Canadian investor to cash in on Oil Sands development and Liquid Natural Gas. Some might call that treasonous in intent.
The Oil Sands and LNG represent trillions in profits, for not only China, but for all investors who own related land leases, for shareholders of industry producers, and for those investors lucky enough to be “in the know.” The average Canadian remains mostly oblivious.
The CPC climate plan is a sham. CPC has no intention of limiting FF production. In fact there’s every indication they will ramp up efforts to maximize profits. These are the jobs Alberta Premier Kenney has promised to deliver. This is the prosperity Scheer refers to.
Most of the “prosperity” will go to wealthy investors, who are heavily invested in FF development in Canada. Minimal royalties will be payed to govts for public use. Western Canadian residents will be subject to exponential expansion of FF development and the environmental risks.
But there will be plenty of prosperous jobs in the FF industry in western Canada. And tremendously more GHG emissions that contribute to global climate change.
