It's as as much May's fault as theirs, but the EU's backed itself into an amazing corner. It's position is: unless we surrender to it sovereignty over a large chunk of our territory, containing millions of our citizens, it won't even talk to us re other mutually beneficial deals.
I mean, if you think abt it, how cld the EU's position be any more aggressive towards the UK, short of literally attempting to blockade us or invade our territory?
I don't believe most EU citizens hv the foggiest idea of what the backstop is or means. I imagine they think it's something to do with "protecting Ireland" rather than annexing a large part of the UK. I think the UK govt shld hv bn much more front-foot with its PR.
Why hasn't the UK govt had articles in EU27 newspapers almost every day, explaining what the backstop actually is & why it's so unthinkable for us to accept it? Ordinary EU27 citizens wld side with us if they knew what this was truly about.
