This is how you shrink ambition in society - a culture where kids turn jaded and decadent by the time they reach youth (sometimes earlier)
Now a clarification -

I don't think it is wrong to push kids hard from a young age

What's wrong is to benchmark them against each other, without an absolute standard to aspire to
When the culture is competitive, you shrink your ambition. You judge yourself on a relative scale

The great John Stuart Mill in the 19th century, who had a remarkable tutor in his father, warned against "competitive" education in his autobiography
