A ship captain or airline pilot doesn't steer based on the aggregate vote of their passengers. They use their expertise and best judgement to steer a safe and sensible course. Our MPs are the same. The people elect them (representative democracy).
But in between general elections they're in charge of their own destiny. They have no obligation to take shouted instructions from the electorate. That's not how our political system works. Every 5 years (or less) we get to pick the next captains, the next pilots.
But that's the extent of our input. The rest of the time MPs act according to their duty of care to do what's *best* for the UK and for their constituents, according to their own judgement.

Don't like what they opted to do? Then vote them out *next time*.
But when it comes to Brexit, both (many) MPs and the electorate are trying to erode the system. MPs because they are refusing to make the best choices and allowing themselves to be led by the nose to sub-optimal outcomes instead.
And the electorate, by trying to butt into the governance of the UK in between general elections. They have the absolute right to write to their MPs. Their MPs have the absolute right to ignore their "suggestions" in favour of courses of action they deem better for the UK.
