There are several layers of problems with government of national unity:
- simple majority needed to form
- 2/3 majority needed to organise a general election
So the numbers could be there for a GNU but not a GE.

And just like the opposition parties stiffed the Tories who wanted a GE, the Tories could stiff the GNU in the same way. (We have the Fixed Term Parliaments Act to thank for that.)
But that means the LibDems, rebel Tories etc won't risk putting Corbyn and Labour in charge.

It's one thing being stuck with a GNU until 2022. A proper GNU, I mean (cross-party and led by a neutral figure.)
But the alternative is to be stuck with Corbyn and Labour in charge until 2022, while the Tories laugh themselves silly at all the unseemly opposition infighting.

Once you really understand that, it's very much easier to see why the LibDems and rebel Tories have taken the stance they have.
