@gtconway3d Instead, I sometimes privately do what I call a "hypothetical functional diagnosis." I ask: IF this person were (NPD, ASD, once Munchausen by Proxy), how might it affect their engagement in the mediation process? And what approaches might I take to help them participate fully?

@gtconway3d Basically, I use MH concepts to help me figure out how to help my client-parties in PRACTICAL (not therapeutic) ways. I'm not diagnosing; I'm using thought experiments to help myself see and understand what they're experiencing, and hopefully help them.

@gtconway3d This is what Conway is suggesting: that we experimentally compare Trump's known behavior into the (easy to understand!) diagnostic model of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and see whether it yields any insights we can apply in practical, functional (not therapeutic) ways.

@gtconway3d And "practical, functional" includes "self-protective." If you see a dog snarling, stalking, its lips covered with foam, you don't need to be a veterinarian to reach a fxal diagnosis of "rabies" and stay away. Ditto w/ NPD in a person with access to the nuclear arsenal.
