It is genuinely extraordinary that our government could still, STILL be surprised the EU thinks Northern Ireland must be in the customs union indefinitely. It was literally written in the agreement the government signed up to 22 months ago.
The backstop was always, always, going to be forever. May compulsively lied about that and a lot of Tories fell for it. EU was always clear: backstop would last until UK could find unicorns to replace it. Call that ‘temporary’ if you want - but you’d have to be a brave gambler.
