EDITORIAL: "Precautions spawned by #Joker controversy are good for business"
The #1 film at the box office last weekend was @JokerMovie. It is also the most controversial motion picture to be released in recent years, and single-handedly the most controversial motion picture to have come from studio, Warner Bros., since #BonnieandClyde (1967).
The @USArmy has "credible" information from Texas law enforcement "regarding the targeting of an unknown movie theater during the release" of this R-rated film. In Colorado, it won't fill any of the 16 screens of the Century theater that was the scene of the 2012 shooting . . .
. . . during a screening of #TheDarkKnightRises; the request was filed in a signed letter between the Warners, three families of some of the victims, and the mother of a witness. Both the LAPD and the NYPD have stepped up security in theatres showing the picture . . .
. . . and, as well, the largest arthouse theater chain in America—@LandmarkLTC—has asked patrons not to wear costumes of its lead character during first-run screenings at its theatres. The possibility that a mass shooting might occur during a screening of the production . . .
. . . has also led Warner Bros. to restrict attendance of its red-carpet screening to photographers only. Its violence, which some believe is more graphic than your average #MCU release, may have something to do with the intense controversy that has aroused the film so.
Some will debate intensely over the merits of the controversy. Some might protest the brutality of the entire film. Others will be brave enough to embrace it anyway. (And, if there's any consolation, its @RottenTomatoes is currently standing at no lower, no higher, than 69%.)
I say all this has made its standing at the box office all the more justifiable. It gets people to actually talk about the new picture. It makes people genuinely curious as to what this picture has that has people this concerned, this confused, and, what's more, this alarmed.
And that leads to the film raking in millions upon millions of dollars around the world. We can put aside the questions over whether or not it will revitalize the #DCEU; we should instead talk about how this movie might well be the #BonnieandClyde of the twenty-first century.
