Here's an effort to outline in as simple a way as possible what each of the main scenarios would mean for movement of goods across the UK's land & sea borders.

In a Transition Period, following the #WithdrawalAgreement, the movement of goods between the UK and EU remains free flowing.
During this time, the negotiations on the future UK-EU trade agreement will be underway.

If at the end of the Transition Period, there is no UK-EU FTA close enough to avoid a hard Irish border, the backstop will kick-in on a temporary basis.
It has both NI-specific and UK-wide dimensions to minimise controls needed across UK land & sea borders.

Some deeply sobering thoughts about #Brexit tonight, from the perspective of a former Whitehall civil servant with an MA in International Relations.

Bottom line: get out of the UK. Get out now, while you can, however you can. Go wherever you can. I'm deadly serious. 1/
Westminster is obsessed with the "backstop", which is essentially how to administer a border within the island of Ireland. This is a distraction: throw enough arbitrage of VAT at the powers that be in Northern Ireland, à la Canarias or Ålands, and they'll fall in line. 2/
The Irish border question can technically be resolved. It has been resolved numerous times in the past, but the problem is that it has largely been a militarised border, like Iraq-Kuwait after the 1990s conflict, which is politically unacceptable. 3/

Can't believe we're still trying to "get around" the #Brexit NI backstop

If you want to do your own trade deals, you need different tariffs & regs. If you need those, you need a border. If you don't want those, there's no point leaving the SM & CU.

We can't have a border
We're going to leave the EU, sign the WA, spend 3 years going around the houses and in the end we'll be in something like the CU & something like the SM.

There won't be a choice because we can't have a border on the Island of Ireland
#Brexit is pointless,
Brexiters can gnash their teeth & slap their heads but we have a unique situation & a long standing commitment
Brexit needs borders to make sense
We cannot have a border in Ireland
So Brexiters cannot have a proper brexit
And they all know it

So the wheels have hit tarmac on one of the key #brexit conundrums:
Everyone is working so hard to find a deal that avoids a hard border in Ireland.. but if they fail, and there is ‘no deal’, then by default, there is a hard border. The @EU_Commission finally spelt that out today
Here is what EU Commission Spokesman @MargSchinas said on the issue - 🎥
The spokesman is drawing the logical conclusion to the argument of those proposing that the #Brexit deal *must* include a ‘backstop’ to avoid a hard border: that if there if there is ‘no deal’, then a hard Irish border is unavoidable.

What is most interesting about this piece by Dr Graham Gudgin on @BrexitCentral is how virtually identical it is to every other pro-Brexit piece on the Irish border.

Here's a brief thread noting some of these common features.

The border as battleground:
"The Irish border thus remains the key battleground in the war of attrition that is the UK-EU Brexit talks."

This has the effect of asserting that if UK moves on red lines here it loses the Brexit war.

Thus raising the stakes & raising tensions.

It blames the change of Taoiseach from Kenny to Varadkar for "hard stance from the Irish govt that has soured UK-Irish relations".
It sees Irish intentions as barely disguised irredentism.
Yet lays all responsibility for progress on Irish govt accepting "practical solutions".
