A friend encouraged me to share my #mentalhealthday story. So here it is.

I had my first major depressive episode when I was 14. It was five years before anyone even said the word “depression” to me, and another five years before I was brave enough to ask a friend for help. 1/5
Over the next 15 years, I was on and off different meds, in and out of therapy. I got married, had two kids, started a business, wrote a book, and traveled the world. I was mentally stable maybe 25% of the time. 2/5
10 years ago I finally received an accurate diagnosis of Bipolar II. This means I’ll be on meds the rest of my life. I’m still in and out of therapy. I’m mentally stable most of the time (I … think?). Everyone in my life knows, including my kids. 3/5
OMG THIS SUCKS, ok I'll keep going.

I treat my mental disorder like people treat diabetes: taking meds is just part of what I do to stay alive. And they don’t change my personality or alter my perception of What’s Real. They’re a corrective lens so I can see my life clearly. 4/5
Friends, depression isn’t a character issue. Seeing a therapist isn’t self-indulgent. Meds aren’t a shortcut or a crutch. You are, in fact, trying as hard as you can. If you’re suffering, tell someone. Find a therapist. Try meds. You are strong. Your life is waiting. ❤️ /end
OH AND ALSO: If you know someone who is clearly struggling, It's likely easier for you to reach out than it is for them to ask for help. Say more than, "How are you?" Try, "It seems like you're having a hard time lately," or "Is there something going on you want to talk about?"
