If you can master computer science well enough to teach it in 3 years, you can surely drop into a tech scene after 9 months, pick up a few new ideas, and get right back to kicking ass. Mastery is over rated. Being good in this field is all about being good at learning fast.
I have mastered things and sat on top of them before.

And while I was sitting on top of that hill playing Lord of the Mountain, I wasn’t learning so many new things. Going from 80% master to 99% mastery has way fewer aha moments, way more trivia.

Get off yer damn mountain!
In the end, being good at programming isn’t about compulsively staring at an LCD screen watching for every bloody new idea that crosses the industry’s collective mind. It’s about deeply grokking core concepts and making leaps from them to new things. Not memorization. Not fads.
Can you learn? Can you leap? Can you walk away from it all for nine months and then bring one of those big aha moments with you when you see your craft again with fresh goddamn eyes like the first day you fell in love with it?

Then you are doing it right.
