I've been wanting to add my 2 cents to the #RockHall discussion for a while know, but I just couldn't figure out the whole blog thing. So here it goes. (1/22)
I'm writing this from the following perspective: that I basically have unlimited money, and what I'd do if I established myself as Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, and CEO/President of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame + Museum. (2/22)
First, I would sit in on the nominating committee just to hear out how they do things. So the first year will likely see no significant changes. (3/22)
For the second year, there wouldn't be a ballot. I would take that year, and make the induction class all about snubbed members and backing bands. There wouldn't be a normal committee meeting; (4/22)
just a few individuals to help hash out all of the names needed to fill this gaping, inexplicable void. There would also be a rule in place about nominating WHOLE bands. (5/22)
As long as a band member is featured on a recording of fresh material, they should be included. Some bands could have 20-plus members, but so what?(6/22)
During that year, we would work in changes to the organizational structure. Not entirely sure how it's laid out now, but we would create/revamp an Events department under the umbrella of the Museum separate from the Foundation and have them coordinate the induction ceremony.(7/22
This is to avoid conflict of interest with the induction process; nobody from the committee can be in the Events department, and vice versa. No more classes based on how the show would pan out - get the inductees list together, and have Events figure out the rest from there.(8/22
As far as the ballot process goes, I would implement several things. First, there would be a write-in on the ballots (the voter ballots only). This is for the voters to add who they want to see on the ballot.(9/22)
The number one vote-getter would automatically appear on the ballot the following year. This would give more voter input in the process. (10/22)
Next, I would re-implement the Seven Year Rule: if an artist is nominated for seven consecutive years, that artist would automatically be inducted the following year.(11/22)
On top of that, though, I would add a Twelve Year Rule: if an artist is nominated for twelve years TOTAL without getting voted in, that artist would also automatically be inducted the following year.(12/22)
And this would be retroactive - put Chic on the ballot one more time, and they're in.(13/22)
Now for the more interesting part. I would reorganize the nominating committee. We would have 30 total permanent members of the committee - a diverse group of industry know-it-alls.(14/22)
They must commit to traveling to the committee to meet - no teleconferencing. Also, the nominating committee will be in a different location each year. Not back & forth between two or three locations, but locations all over the place.(15/22)
Memphis one year, Seattle the next, then maybe Austin, then we might even go to London, etc. The location would be announced at the beginning of the year. (16/22)
Each permanent member would sit out every third year, so that every year there are 20 permanent members on a committee.(17/22)
After the location is announced, we would take applications for 10 temporary members - those members must also commit to physically attending the committee.(18/22)
Each temporary member cannot serve more than once every five years, though they could potentially get brought on as a permanent member.(19/22)
The changes to the committee are to create a different set of minds each year - with different assemblies of permanent members, as well as fresh faces year after year. (20/22)
And those temporary members would bring fresh insights from different locations and how the music affects the population on a regional basis - not just from New York City or Los Angeles (though we certainly would include those cities in the rotations). (21/22)
Lastly (for now) I'd like to add a rule for the nominating committee: no more than one person from a particular organization on the committee any given year. So Rolling Stone can't have 9 members, or Atlantic Records, or whomever. (22/22)
