Exc: Business groups alarmed by new details of GB-NI checks after Brexit

Barclay says there'll be "minimal targeted interventions" on goods heading west to east

An MP yells "checks!"
Priti Patel has submitted to the Home Affairs Select Committee a clarification on goods heading from NI to GB

She says west to east trade will be "unfettered" with no "checks" — but there'll be a "minimal administrative process" on some goods

Same line used by Downing St yday
Barclay: each NI-GB exit summary declaration will be a "single form" submitted "electronically" and won't require "physical checks"

True, but someone will need to check them...

Key point: As @denisstaunton & others have said, UK and EU may well agree to waive these declarations

Boris Johnson says "there'll be no checks between Northern Ireland and GB" under the terms of the Brexit deal, which simply isn't true
Barclay told Lords that goods heading west to east would require exit summary declarations

HMG's impact assessment said goods going the other way would need import declarations and Entry Summary Declarations

These may well end up being "light touch" — but they're still checks
Downing Street says NI-GB exit summary declarations are not checks but "minimal administrative processes"

But as @JP_Biz et al point out, these forms, even if filled out and submitted electronically, will need to be checked

Ken Clarke says he'll back the deal but asks Johnson to guarantee that a new FTA will maintain frictionless trade

He goes on to mouth "rubbish" as Johnson says elites who run the EU are pushing for a federal super state
Nigel Dodds: "It was once said that no British PM could ever agree to such terms... and indeed those who sought the leadership of the Conservative party said that at our conference... will he now abide by that and please reconsider the fact we must leave as one nation together."

Since the UK Government won't produce a detailed economic assessment / impact assessment of the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill I thought I could provide some pointers - summary being the deal finds the perfect point to maximise future uncertainty 1/
First the good news for Government though - we could start our assessment by saying the deal delivers Brexit as promised by the referendum, and that for a future FTA relationship with the EU, global trade deals could deliver 0.4% to GDP (Nov 2018 HMG analysis) 2/
However, the same Government analysis suggests a future FTA relationship with the EU will potentially lead to a 6.7% hit to GDP (making some assumptions on migration any many other things) 3/

🚨 NEW: Senior Irish source says this No.10 claim - via @thetimes’ @hzeffman - that Varadkar told Johnson he’d compromise on Brexit, if Northern Ireland stayed in the EU’s single market, is either “untrue or a major misunderstanding”
They point out that the current British proposals would NOT see Northern Ireland remain in the EU’s own customs union, but rather a member of a ‘customs union compromised of the EU and the UK’

Media coverage to date focused on the structure of this single @IrelandsFuture event rather than the reasons for it taking place. In more than 20yrs covering politics, I can't recall many, if any bigger political gatherings outside party conferences/ard fheiseanna.
The loudest applause so far were for 'we didn't vote for #Brexit', applause against the bomb in Derry, and applause in support of the Principle of Consent (respecting majority view in NI/North).
These debates on the future have to take place across all communities and between them. Demographic change, the failure of Stormont & #Brexit mean some change is inevitable. We all need to play a part in that discussion and find a way to protect everyone's rights and identities.

Howsabout a 4 slide summary from @DPhinnemore & me setting out what we can be pretty sure of and what the UK/EU (dis)agree on - as viewed from Northern Ireland.

1st: a lack of progress on the Protocol on NI/IRL in the draft Withdrawal Agmt.
All these colours have to turn green (i.e. agreed in principle & text) before we get that Deal for exit day next March.

Note that red circle - backstop is intended to be trumped at some point.
