Here's the deal #America; whatever you had before, forget it. That is all gone. The moment Trump violated the law and nothing was done (day 1), rule of law in the States was over. The Presidential lawyer claims the President is above the law. It's been 1,000 days since then.
In those 1000 days, the President has whittled the 3 branches of government down to 1.5. There is the Executive (which OWNS the Judicial, for the most part, and the Senate), vs. the House. Without major legislation or changes, the President has crippled checks and balances.
The President owns the Justice Department. He owns the Supreme Court and Senate. The Reps continue to pack all courts with Trumpers (44 in a single day!). This is like John Gotti being in complete charge of the Justice Dept. while they investigated him. What does this mean?
1) The Impeachment proceedings are doomed. If the Reps move against Trump they know any possibility of coming back from his ruin is impossible. Many Reps will go to prison. It is ride or die. The Senate, which must try the President will hear the case in 1 day and dismiss it.
2) Trump cannot cede power or he faces unpardonable State charges. He will go to prison for various crimes in NY if he ever leaves office. Trump is the most base, simple, animalistic creature imaginable; he will NEVER do this. Win or lose in 2020, he is not voluntarily leaving.
3) PLEASE vote, but know your election may be partially (at best) or wholly (it is very possible) compromised. Not only are foreign actors interfering (this is NOT theory, it is fact) the REPUBLICANS are actively gerrymandering and doing everything they can to disenfranchise.
4) Law enforcement and military are HEAVILY invested in the President. Do not believe otherwise. Why was Representative Gaetz not arrested for violating the SCIF security by Capitol Police? That's a really good question. You or I would go to jail.
5) When law applies or does not apply ultimately at the whim of a ruler without oversight who can act with impunity, that is a dictatorship. This is not the Civil War. This is not Watergate. This is not the Clinton Scandal. This is America shaking apart at speed.
What is there to do, then? Well, there's only one thing. Look to South Korea. Look to Hong Kong. Continuous mass protests that disrupt the economy — literally the only thing Trumps' dark-money backers care about. Ruin their fiscal year and they will ruin Trump.
My overriding fear is people have BARELY EVEN NOTICED this disintegration of government. It is not becoming something horrible, it IS something horrible and has been for YEARS. By the time the average American wakes up to this, it will be unrecoverable.
So please stop pretending this is status quo, or that some future legal event or election will turn the tide. Those fights, for the most part ended day 1 when the President openly broke the emoluments clause and nothing was done. The US is bleeding out.
Wake up, look around. You have concentration camps. You have a President that *IS* above the law. You have open and obvious political and financial corruption. You are a Banana Republic.
