I am always struck by the correlation of techno-desire with populations of disabled people who are less immersed in the culture and community of disability.

We find DHH support for sound awareness systems decreases the further into deaf culture you go.

Sometimes this desire is a product of systemic discrimination for having a non normative body. Is the problem then not still the system of oppression rather than the body?

I want us to start deploying technologies outward to systems rather than inward onto bodies. #ASSETS2019

As a disabled person it hurts to see all the adjustments that we’ve been denied suddenly be made available because non-disabled people might get sick.

But we will remember, we see you & your ableism.

So next time you deny us accommodations, we will say “but during Coronavirus?”

I'll start.

Working from home. I'm visually impaired & use a white cane, using inaccessible public transport everyday is exhausting physically & mentally.

Working from home means I can be productive, happy & safe.

I've frequently been refused this reasonable adjustment.

Amen! Non-disabled often see disabled people simply as individuals with individual conditions. In reality, we’re people with shared history, language, culture & consensus. We’re a person, yes, but also a people.

Most programs or services which work with disabled populations get this wrong. That’s understandable, but must change to ensure success. This is crucial. It will not only ensure better individual outcomes, but will grow the impact and influence of the group. It’s also fun to do.
I’ve noticed when disabled professionals and advocates make a point about disability, they’re often countered with “Well, this other disabled person thinks this.” Whenever that’s said, that tells me the person does not get this crucial aspect of disability.

#Disabled people often go decades, even whole lives, without being included in definitions of what it means to be human. Whether people are talking about human thought, biology, creativity, or whatever, they often exclude our ways of being. It feels like subtle erosion.
When you're talking about human senses, ways of moving, ways of thinking / feeling, ways of philosophising / relating to various concepts...make sure you're not treating it as a singular experience. Even if you don't know all the different types of human experiences (who does?)
you can still say, "It's likely that some people will experience this differently, and we shouldn't assume that this is the only way of being human." Do make an effort to actually represent different experiences, but I get that sometimes you can't represent everything.
