This thread: During my 13 years at the Miami Herald, my colleagues and I have endured endless rounds of pay cuts, furloughs and layoffs. As a single mother with 2children, I had me electric shut off more than once as I struggled to pay the bills..
2. As a former member of the news guild in Philly, I knew it did not have to be this way. Layoffs are often unavoidable, but the way they have been done in Miami have hurt our community and have done little to address the rapid changes i. Our industry.
3. Readers will not read us if there is nothing to read. We must continue to invest in journalism, real journalism, not clicks, and we can’t do that without retaining and hiring a diverse group of journalist at both @MiamiHerald & @elnuevoherald ....
4. The work I’ve done at the Herald shows how important it is to invest in the people they employ. We are didicatef to our communities, & we are Passionate about holding leaders accountable and giving voice to those who aren’t being listened to.
5. And One last irony to this: @EmilyMichot and I are told we are not able to vote in Weds election. This is bec we had previously planned to be out of town on an assignment, working on a documentary about our work on the Jeffrey Epstein case for the Herald.....
6. We have been told that because the dates we arranged for these interviews were our choice, so we cannot vote by absentee ballot. Because we asked one of the victims (a single mother) to take off of work for this interview we could not in good conscience reschedule...
7. So we are urging everyone at @elnuevoherald & @MiamiHerald to VOTE YES on Weds — for you, for Emily & I and for our future.
