TW: Ableist Abuse

Just got glared at while putting on lipstick in public & was reminded of an incident from a while back. I'm waiting for meds to kick in before I can move, so I figure, why not share?

I was sitting in the food court at my local mall, having just finished eating & was putting on my favourite then-new lip tint. It's the one in the pic (highly recommend! 😁). A woman walked up to my table & asked if I was done with it, cuz she wanted to sit there.
She kept frowning at my cane & looking at it while talking to me, arms crossed.

Me: "Not yet. I'll be here about another 20min."

Her: *Tuts & sighs, rolling her eyes*...*goes to walk away, then turns back to face me* "You know, you're not supposed to have that."
She nodded towards the lip tint I'd gone back to applying.

Me: "Excuse me?"

Her: "My taxes pay for YOUR lifestyle and you're NOT supposed to spend it on silly luxuries."

I responded (after a shocked pause): "Lady, I don't know you. Why are you assuming I'm on Centrelink??"
I knew the answer. I just wanted to see whether she'd admit it.

She scoffed & pointed at my cane.

"Well, you're a fucking dole bludger, aren't you??"

Me, stern-faced: "You do realise that about 1 in 4 ppl are disabled, right? Most of us have jobs."
She stopped & I could almost see the cogs spinning, lol.

Me: "Maybe DON'T harass random disabled ppl?? You don't own ANY of us, job or not."

She started just hurling ableist abuse at me in a sort of...shouting whisper voice, so I threatened to call security & she fucked off.
But this is what happens when you have ppl all over the TV insisting that "tax-payers" should get to decide what welfare recipients are allowed to spend our money on. It is OUR MONEY.

And if I have $6 to spare at the end of a fortnight, I WILL get that new lip tint I want 🖕🖕
Oops, forgot to attach the pics, lol. Here it is. It's the Juice Pang Lip Tint from Innisfree & I love it 😁 It's like a glossy liquid lip balm with great pigmentation & leaves a bit of a stain 🙂

Me: *Commencing well-rehearsed response* "Plastic straws make up less than 0.025% of ocean plastic. That phone in your hand does FAR more harm than my MEDICALLY NECESSARY plastic straw. The straw ban mvmt is a farce based on zero evidenceand it's harming disabled ppl."
Her: *Clearly wasn't expecting an informed response to her random act of ableist harassment* "Don't be ridiculous! No one NEEDS plastic straws!"

Me: "Not that it's any of your damn business, but I do and I know dozens of other disabled folks who do, too."

So a weird thing happened to me, today. Walking thru the shops with my cane, I noticed an older woman glaring at me. We made eye contact & she shook her head in disgust, so I gave her a wtf look. As I passed her, she stopped me & said, "That's not a fashion item, you know!"
It took me a moment to realise wtf she meant -- meanwhile, she continued: "SOME ppl actually NEED those and it's extremely disrespectful for you to prance around in public with it, like it's just the latest trend! SHAME on you!"

So it being me, I laughed. How could I not? 🤣
I said, "Why are you assuming I don't actually need it?? Cuz I'm young? Cuz I'm well dressed & wearing makeup? This cane is a mobility aid for me. I'm actually disabled."

Her: *Scoffs* "Suuure you are. And I'm a supermodel."

Me: "Do you expect me to prove it to you?"

@ABC7 Noah's mother Jillian Godfrey is in custody for willful child cruelty. Police say she had notes in her phone documenting Noah's abuse. She wrote Bryce admitted to putting Noah in hot water & cold water for 6+ hours. She told police she heard Noah ask Bryce why he was hurting him.

@FalcoMain This thread is a prime example of gender essentialism: the idea that men & women are inherently different, which leads to the behavioral differences we see in reality. However, I would challenge you to consider the other side of this debate: social constructionism.
@FalcoMain Without a doubt, men & women differ in sex hormone production & body mass/fat. However, we also assign them stringent roles in society based on their genitals, which affects how each & every person treats them. What they are encouraged to learn. What they are punished for.
@FalcoMain Humans are extremely social creatures. We pick up that gender is a reliable predictor of behavior & social roles before we can speak or form memories (kids are surprised by men putting on lipstick by 2). &then, when we form our identities bw 4-12yo, we rely on those stereotypes -
