Today's #1619Project collaboration between @Smithsonian and @NYTMag allows Americans to do something important—to illuminate the darkest corners of our history, one of which is the story of slavery. Bunch II, 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian: “Let us use history to inspire us to push a country forward, to help us believe that all things are possible and to demand a country lives up to its stated ideas.”
The #1619Project allows us to understand how central slavery was to our creation and to who we are to this day. It reminds us that America has always been shaped by diverse people and has always been touched and informed by the African American experience.

When Dr. Charles Blockson invited me to Philadelphia to see artifacts related to Harriet Tubman, I was doubtful that much material from her life had survived. But at least I'd get a Philly cheesesteak and have the opportunity to see Blockson, who I admire. #CreatingNMAAHC Black and white portrait of a woman standing for her portrait in a studio, her hands crossed over each other. @NMAAHC When we met at Temple University, Dr. Blockson brought out a tiny box. It seemed too small to hold a legacy as important as Harriet Tubman's and I thought I'd wasted a trip. But then Blockson opened the box.
@NMAAHC That day in Philadelphia, Dr. Blockson showed us 25 artifacts. A homemade knife and fork that Tubman carried on forays into the south to rescue enslaved people, photos of Tubman's 1913 funeral that few had ever seen. I'll never forget the 11 p.m. meeting with Juan Garza, a self-described "Afro-Ecuadorian," that resulted in the first object entering @NMAAHC's collection. For #HispanicHeritageMonth, I want to share with you the story of this wooden boat seat from Ecuador. #CreatingNMAAHC Wooden bench-like seat carved with a spider web and spider.
@NMAAHC Many formerly enslaved people fled to the swampy areas of Ecuador away from white enslavers, where they traveled waterways by canoe. Elderly women made the canoe seats. This one was made by Garza's grandmother. Spot an image of the West African trickster, Anansi the Spider? #HHM Overhead view of light wooden boat seat. It has been carved with a spider web that reaches every side of the top of the seat where you sit and a fairly large spider in center of web.
The Ecuadorian boat seat represents the shared connections between the cultures of the transatlantic slave trade in the Americas. #HispanicHeritageMonth

K, sit back #nativetwitter, I have a story to tell about a canoe, a map, and a 4 year research project.
When I was but a wide-eyed undergrad, dipping my toes into a bachelor's in anthropology, a class in archaeology briefly discussed a dugout canoe found in the Mississippi delta that carbon dated to around 1500 years old. It was taken to Texas A&M and disappeared into their lab.
This is not uncommon, many artifacts take years to fully research, but it piqued my curiosity because there were canoe-based cultures throughout the Mississippi for a long time. One of the oldest was the Poverty Point culture which goes back nearly 3000 years.

1619 is commonly cited as the date slavery first arrived in “America.” No matter that historians mostly consider the 1619 date a red herring. Enslaved people were working in English Bermuda in 1616.
Spanish colonies and forts in today’s Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina had enslaved Africans throughout the mid-to-late 1500s: in fact, a slave rebellion in 1526 helped end the Spanish attempt at settling South Carolina.

#History/#Art thread – From my recent trip to Madurai/Tirunelveli. On Jain sites (some with a rich history dating back to at least the 3rd cent. BCE), early Pandyan rock-cut cave temples (7th-8th cent. CE) & the amazing Vettuvan koil.

Before I start on the places, the history around all this is fascinating & splits opinion. Is it apt to call the script Tamili/Tamil Brahmi? Did it develop independently in the Tamil country/come with the Jain monks from the north? Were 8,000 Jains actually impaled in Madurai?>

Basically, my argument is that we need to represent the PERSONHOOD of enslaved people - and that doing so means recognizing that *they resisted in countless ways* that go far beyond the narrow textbook renderings of self-liberation/escape & uprising (although those are important)
