George Will, the man who devoted his entire public career to advancing the conservative political movement that elevated Donald Trump to the White House in 2016, thinks civilization is dealt a harmful blow when a baseball player celebrates a homerun too expressively.
And yes, I know Will is not a fan of Trumps. And yes, I also know he wrote a 500+ page book about conservatism that was published in 2019 and which does not contain the word Trump. So phooey on that.
2016 exit polls showed that 81% of voters who identified as "conservative" voted for Donald Trump. So George Will can distance himself from Trump as much as he wants, but there's no debating the fact that "the conservative movement" made Trump the GOP nominee.
And also, the Tea Party helped make Trump possible, and the Tea Party was comprised overwhelmingly of people who identified as "conservative." Screenshot is a 2012 poll.
Some data on the Tea Party/Trump connection. In sum, Trump's base overlaps tremendously with the constituency of Americans who call themselves "conservative." Sure, some conservatives hate him, but the overwhelming majority love him. people-press.org/2019/05/16/tru…
So with apologies to the George Will defenders out there, to my mind, you just don't get to spend 40 years as a key articulator of GOP conservatism and then turn around and say you're shocked, shocked that your party nominated and now overwhelmingly supports Trump.
If you're George Will, your literal job for which you get paid is to understand American political dynamics from a conservative perspective. To just wash your hands clean of Trump as if it has nothing to do with you is professional malpractice.
