Sitting inside the White House, Mitch McConnell gave President Donald Trump some straightforward advice: Stop attacking senators — including Mitt Romney — who will likely soon judge your fate in an impeachment trial, per two ppl familiar. Story w @nancook politico.com/news/2019/10/3…
The private, one-on-one meeting last week between the Senate majority leader and Trump covered several weighty issues including Syria. But like everything these days when it comes to Trump, impeachment was high on the president’s mind.
Trump is laying off Romney but also not lobbying Collins, Isakson, Gardner or Rubio as Senate prepares to take up impeachment trail. Instead he’s hanging with allies like Graham and Perdue and calling up other supportive senators like Cruz, Rand and Kennedy
Kennedy missed call from Trump on Tuesday afternoon and played phone tag; the finally connected on Wednesday, Kennedy said. The planned topic was another issue, but of course impeachment came up.

“He’s not depressed or anything. He just really thinks he’s being treated unfairly”
Last week Trump had 10 senators to situation room for Syria talk. After he took them up to Roosevelt Room and griped about impeachment.

“He said he thought the process was unfair and he hadn’t done anything wrong. And he wanted us to know that,” said an attendee
Caught up with Romney, who said he’s heard nothing from the White House other than the Trump tweets. Even that he downplayed: “I didn’t notice the tweets”

Still, after McConnell advice, Trump has tamped down the whole “impeach Romney” thing
