But in all seriousness, he wrote the words Ivanka quoted in February of 1801, before he was even inaugurated for his first term. Part of what he had in mind, most likely, were the inane conspiracy theories that conservative preachers and newspapers had circulated about him.
There are more than a few parallels between today's MAGA political culture and the Federalist political culture of 1800 with its paranoid conspiracy theories about Jefferson, the unhinged church-destroying Socialist who loves dangerous European ideas.
Put another way, America's ur-conspiracy theory, the Bavarian Illuminati hoax, was started in 1798 by conservatives who used it to attack Jefferson. The Trumps, the inheritors of that culture of conspiracy theories, are now using Jefferson's words to defend themselves.
