@MikkiLexa A little backstory on this piece: I first learned about @MikkiLexa's work when I saw her retorting to a guy who disagreed with her on some piece of film criticism by saying he didn't see anyone paying her for her thoughts on movies.
@MikkiLexa So I read a bit of her Twitter feed, checked out her YouTube channel, and then dropped into the thread with the guy and offered to pay her for her thoughts on movies.

The result is essay on cinematographic history bought to spite one guy in particular.

@MikkiLexa Paid guest posts on a Substack newsletter? I don't know how common that is, but I'd like to make a habit of it. Part of my philosophy as a creator is that the power of people working together is greater than the sum of its parts.
@MikkiLexa So if you're going to read one bit of horror history this Halloween evening, make it this one, the one that was commissioned and written specifically to make one reply guy even more wrong than he already was.

There needs to be a solution to the fact that real healthcare reform would be a lot of people in the insurance industry out of a job, but "the people in this industry needs the work" isn't a reason to keep a predatory system. It's like a perverse, inverted form of welfare.
If our society expected people running private industry to have a conscience the way we expect people generally to, it would be a scandal that health insurers have spent their resources blocking reform and not transitioning their businesses gradually over time.
I've got a foot out the door so I can't really get into this, but the thing where we just go "but you can't expect a big company to put people before profits" is wrong, the current state of affairs is artificial as the alternative would be. And such "profits" are short-sighted.

Other people on my timeline talking about real state scams adjacent to the AirBNB stuff and I've got to say...

Before entering into a business arrangement with a stranger, particularly one where you're relying on them for a roof, Google every piece of information you have.
I was talking about how people use minimal cues to establish another person as safe? For a lot of people in the US, talking about prayer and God gets them most of the way there.
Lot of #Exvangelicals on here can tell you how, within church groups, mistrusting another believer calls into question the faith that the in-group is saved and that is weaponized by scammers and predators within the church.

Scammers outside the church know about that, too.

If you find yourself using AirBNB, here's what I would suggest, based on the past ~5 years of scammer stories:

1. Plug the address into Google Maps first.
2. Compare Street View pictures of the property to the interior photos.
3. Verify the hosts exist.

If you can't find the address on Google Maps, red flag.
If the details of the interior don't match the exterior (e.g., window size/placement/style), red flag.
If the hosts have no discernible existence outside the listing, red flag.
These things not coming up doesn't mean it's good, but any of these red flags should cause you to take a deeper look, or pass on it.

Also it seems like a good idea to check the reviews *specifically for astroturf*.
