The cross-party Commons Constitutional Affairs Committee has this morning issued a damning indictment of the state of electoral law in the UK. (1/6)

@CommonsPACAC
Beyond consolidation and simplification, the committee advocates deep reform. It welcomes plans for digital imprints showing who has produced online ads and calls for a wider review of digital campaigning. It also urges reform of the system for challenging election results. (2/6)
It welcomes the government's proposals to tighten up the postal voting rules and to introduce an electoral offence of intimidation against a candidate or campaigner. (3/6)
As for the government's plans to roll out voter ID requirements across the country, by contrast, the committee urges 'extreme caution', saying there is insufficient evidence to judge costs or 'the potential effect of voter ID on particular demographics'. (4/6)
This report adds to near universal pressure for electoral law to be simplified and updated as a matter of urgency - see my previous thread for more. This must be a priority in all election manifestos and for the post-election government. (5/6)
