My first ever testing conference?
London Selenium Conference 2012.

Now, 7 years on, so much has happened. But it's in those 7 years, that I formulated my testing/automation views and that's what my keynote is about.

I'm emotional about it because...
I'm mid transition now, from FriendlyTester to FriendlyBossBoss. It's feels like an official ending to this chapter. Keynoting where that early spark was lit that got fully ignited by @ministryoftest and this incredible community.

Your automated checks need to be TRIMS...

T - Targeted
R - Reliable
I - Informative
M - Maintainable
S - Speedy

If they aren’t the above, go and TRIM them...
Targeted. Move them to a more targeted layer based on the risk and what you are trying to test. This will likely also help with reliability. If a check is big, break it up into smaller checks. This will also improve maintainability.
Informative. Targeted checks are more informative as it’s usually quicker to identify the failure, because you aren’t testing many things at once. Also you’ll be on a specific seam, so safe time debugging failures. Also the naming is clearly allowing faster feedback

I will continue to push back on folks comparing Selenium to UI testing tools.
It's unfair to both parties, devalues both.
Also doesn't help with the illusion we have as an industry where we claim to use to selenium to do our UI testing.
You can't just use Selenium
Therefore we sell ourselves short, we don't truly share all the skills we've learnt, other frameworks we've learnt, and the coding ability to glue them all together. We say we use Selenium.
So newbies to testing/automation believe they just need to learn Selenium...
So when they start they struggle and fail, because the illusion gets broken that's it's just 'Selenium'. Acknowledge, share and appreciate all that's needed to build a UI tool from scratch based on Selenium. Break the illusion and let folk understand what it takes

A layman's thread about #AI and #ethics.
This morning as I was driving in to work @BBCr4today discussed a framework for ethics in AI after the £150m Schwarzman donation to Oxford Uni for a new Institute on AI and Ethics. Whoever was speaking was asked for examples... 1/9
Example given: A self driving car bombing down the road and the brakes fail - should the car go ahead killing pedestrians in its path or swerve to avoid them and instead kill the driver (such as the occupant might be). 2/9
Seriously - how may automotive engineers groaned as the classic trolley problem was brought up as an example. I really hope they don't fritter £150m trying to 'solve' the trolley problem! But there we are - it got mentioned... 3/9

I read the “Anatomy of an AI system” by Crawford and Joler (anatomyof.ai), and started thinking about how I've seen AI discussed recently.

So, a thread about the popularization of AI, the everyday discourse on automation, and the importance of technological literacy.
Lately, I’ve attended a fair amount of talks on artificial intelligence. These have mostly been at events about “digitalization”, attended by government officials and library employees.
In most of these talks – as well as in informal discussions sparked by them – the discourse revolves around “AI” as a fuzzy concept. It’s an idea, a wish, and a suggestion, usually solving particular problems with very generic answers. AI is rarely (if ever) actually defined.

In my opinion, the "I" in #AI has been vulgarly kidnapped and abused on many levels (including 'serious' research, sadly) for the sake of anticipated glory.

This has resulted in a tremendous disparity between how #intelligence in #machines is both perceived and understood by the public, and what does it truly mean (or could) in current human-made 'intelligent' artefacts.
