Harsh reality: It will take you 10 years to realize how great our college curriculum is and how critical the core Computer Science subjects are.

Do not get misguided by these "EdTech cum SalesTech" startups and influencers. Everything at scale just boils down to
- Operating system concepts: Mutex, Semaphores, Critical Sections, Thread, Sockets, etc

- Database Internals: Query optimization of Database

- Distributed Systems: Need I say anything here

- Computer Architecture: To understand why vertical scaling has a limit
- Networking: Securing infra, optimizing routing, BGP protocol, CDN, TCP, UDP, etc.

- Multimedia Processing: If you get to build a live streaming platform

to just name a few

Happy first day of #BlackHistoryMonth! To celebrate, we'll periodically take time to honor the brilliant Black minds that have contributed to our field over the years. A thread: Image
First up in our series: @6Gems, who founded @BlackGirlsCode after noticing the severe underrepresentation of minorities in the startup world. Bryant's nonprofit has enabled many young black girls to create meaningful work & go on to become leaders in their communities. #BHM2022 Image
@6Gems @BlackGirlsCode Katherine Johnson was a human computer whose calculations were essential to @NASA's Project Mercury, Apollo 11, and more. When the space program switched to digital computers, Johnson helped confirm the accuracy of their calculations. Image

The Tech Evangelism in out country feels extremely disconnected from "Tech".

We have the same people stuck at 40% learning spreading knowledge on 10% in a recycled loop.
#tech #programming #computerscience
The content on "How to use GitHub?, How to use LinkedIn effectively? Build your own personal brand?" is so exploited over the past 2 years it almost feels like nobody is programming after the freshman year.
Why is it rare to find people at 80% of the journey imparting knowledge at 50%-70%?

❓ Do you know what comparison-based sorting algorithms are?

Did you know that sorting algorithms that are *not* comparison-based can run faster?

A short thread 🧵 ... 1/3

#ComputerScience #100DaysOfCode
Comparison-based algorithms:

🔹 Repeatedly ask "is this element smaller/bigger than this other element?". A function that acts as a black box answers these questions.

🔹 Are general-purpose. No assumptions are made about the input data.

Examples: Quicksort and Mergesort. 2/3
Non-comparison-based algorithms:

🔹 Make strong assumptions about the input data (for example, all elements are small integers).

🔹 Can elude the O(n log n) lower bound of comparison-based algorithms and run in O(n) time.

Examples: Counting sort and Radix sort. 3/3

I am really thrilled to release #AutoSpill onto @biorxivpreprint. It is a novel method for applying compensation to #flowcytometry data, which reduces the error by ~100,000-fold. It is thanks to AutoSpill that we can push machines to their max colours

biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
#AutoSpill is a beautiful example of what #maths can add to #immunology, led by the talented Dr Carlos Roca.

It has really open up my eyes to the potential of #computationalbiology, and is the reason why we have a new #datascience position available:

babrahaminstitute.livevacancies.co.uk/#/job/details/…
So how does #AutoSpill work? If you just want to compensate your data, simply upload your single colour controls to autospill.vib.be and then copy the spillover matrix to your #flowcytometry program of choice

@CarlyEWhyte can walk you through the whole process in <2'

Emotion aware technology
Facial recognition is capable of much more than merely identifying the subject of a photo or video
In fact, recognizing an individual is just the beginning of what is possible...
Emotion aware technology allows the viewer to get a glimpse inside the heart and mind of the subject by analyzing subtle facial movements in real time
How might this new technology be used by consumers, private corporations, and the government in the future?
