1/ They say every great startup is based on a secret. If I was a startup, my secret would be that everything successful I’ve done has been about writing.

I started blogging so long ago I had to write perl scripts to stitch my text entries into HTML.
2/ I learned the Seasteading space in the early 2000s by writing an online book, then spent a decade at Google writing code (pressure for clarity and elegance).

Through blogging I was graced to attract a community of thoughtful & amazing people, many now lifelong friends.
3/ Through reader @JeffLonsdale I was introduced to @JTLonsdale, Jim O' Neill, and @peterthiel, and got funding to start @seasteading and work for years on my dream of creating a world where startup countries compete for citizens. Again - all through writing.
4/ In recent years, due to time pressure I’ve mainly written on Twitter (♥️ brutal efficiency). But I’ve really missed writing longer essays, and I’ve accumulated 35 pgs of notes & drafts on topics like charter cities, crypto, culture wars, mental health, monogamy & more.
5/ So I picked my new career partly to support a regular writing practice, and I am beyond thrilled to now be GETTING AFTER IT.

I’m going to start by upping my game.
6/ Because writing has always been crammed into the crannies of my life, I’ve never taken the time to consciously hone my craft & system, and my website & distribution are a decade out of date (at least). Fortunately, @david_perell & @fortelabs are here to help...
7/ I’m psyched to join their next _Writes of Passage_ class, during which I’ll roll out a new website & blog and start weekly essays (while my stealth project launches in the international press).

The argument against the One Ring is not "it can't do good things". It's that no one being should have all that power.

The argument against censorship isn't "all ideas add to the marketplace". It's that no institution can be trusted to gatekeep the noosphere.
Just as there is no Maxwell's Demon to magically sort atoms without doing thermodynamic work, there is no Speech Daemon to magically sort ideas without doing political work. Such a Daemon would be implemented by, and part of, the status quo power structures.
So the alternative to free speech isn't a magical realm with only the ideas worth debating. It's a MUCH stronger political establishment. At the best, you get China today. At worst you get North Korea under Kim Jong-il. Nowhere in the spread is the USA of any era.

Imagine a world where the best weapons are swords, which are rare. An elite class of samurai form & ally with the wealthy/powerful to lord it over all.

Then a Remington-Gutenberg invents the $99 sword. Chaos reigns as people are sliced and stabbed left & right.
Some civilians show great skill, and civilian/samurai duels reveal that some samurai were weak, just coasting on their monopoly.

But looking at skill turns out to be old-style thinking. The real story is in the shift from elegant duels to disordered mobs.
For it turns out that numbers beat skill and offense beats defense. You can block 100 times, but take one slice to the neck and it's over.

So the shift is no simple disruption of the elite samurai incumbents. The entire style and nature of battles has changed.

I had thoughts on the piece on millennial burnout, and this puts them into words.

This I've got me so hard I burst out crying. I'm not autistic, but when I have a flare up or when I do not get adequate rest and sleep, I am not able to write or read. Literally not able to. Also, I have to carefully ration my energy just to shower and eat.
I'm a first generation immigrant. My parents had to start fresh in their 30s and 40s, WITH two small children. My family does well enough that none of us have to get second jobs, but we have no family or inherited wealth to fall back on. If we want to live, we had to work.
