1) Rees-Mogg thinks Grenfell victims were too stupid to save themselves.
2) Bridgen ‘clarifies’ that to say that Rees-Mogg is a ‘leader’, so better ordinary people
3) The Tory Party doctors a video to pretend Keir Starmer can’t answer a question.
4) We’re still not allowed to see the Russia electoral interference report. Presumably because we’re not clever enough to understand it, or not ‘leaders’ like Rees-Mogg

All in a day’s work.

A short thread on one aspect of the @Peston and @BBClauraK (and others) contribution to the ‘fake news’ machine coming out of Number 10, in the context of @Peston’s response to @OborneTweets piece....
One of the defences offered is that we shouldn’t look at individual tweets out of context, or think of them as being ‘uncritical’ repeating of the misinformation or spin from Cummings or whoever it might be.
This defence misses the ‘fake news’ issue fundamentally. The point is that fake news spreaders *do* use tweets out of context to magnify their narratives and support their agendas.

The thing about this ‘voter ID’ idea is that it has a whole raft of impacts, all of which are pretty appealing to a certain kind of people. (short thread)
Firstly, it has a potentially suppressive effect on particular groups of voters - who are unlikely to vote Tory. Younger people, ethnic minorities, poorer people, people afraid of the authorities.
Secondly, it helps support the idea that those people - ethnic minorities in particular - are inherently untrustworthy, cheats or worse.

It’s a little frustrating that MPs who
(a) paid no attention to leave’s breaking the law
(b) ignored Cambridge Analytica
(c) ignored the DCMS report on misinformation; and
(d) voted to trigger Article 50 despite warnings
...are *now* worried about Johnson overriding parliament.
It’s only *now*, when it’s too late, that they start to care. There have been *plenty* of opportunities to intervene, and plenty of *reasons* to intervene, but it would have taken political bravery to rock the boat. Where was that bravery then?
It’s not just the Brexiters who’ve refused to listen to experts. Almost all MPs refused to listen to expert warnings about triggering Article 50. Almost all refused to listen to expert warnings about electoral interference. Etc etc.

A thread on #Grenfell 💚 and the awful racism I am constantly seeing about it. I am exhausted by it. Last night as I sat next to this stone in our theatre, I read tweets that again qualified the deaths of people in the tower with their ethnicity.
2. I had been on the phone to Debbie’s mother earlier in the day and as the 2 year anniversary approaches, her grief is a raw as it was then. And one of the things that upset her - really upset her - was having seen comments about muslims and immigrants.
3. She had been devastated by the news story about the barbecue cardboard effigy. She doesn’t understand why so much hatred seems to be in the ether for Grenfell victims. ‘They have hearts and bones and blood and family, just like my Debbie. Why are people so horrible?”

It is worth noting that many commentators are saying that this whole wall-business and a "national emergency" is a way of Trump saving face.
"Saving face" is, of course, part of shame culture. People who feel shame, are mired in shame, or are afraid of shame, have to "save face."
Trump is often referred to as a narcissist. Narcissism is a defense -- maybe the major defense -- against shame.

I have cancelled my subscription to @LRB due to incredibly poor judgement in publishing Andrew O'Hagan's lengthy article on #GrenfellTowerFire, and then allowing him space the following week to attack bereaved community member using pseudo-objective word games #Justice4Grenfell
In his reply to the person's complaint that material was used without permission and her words were twisted, O'Hagan reveals new personal details about her and Grenfell survivors.
Throughout the article, he sets up Grenfell activists, local groups and residents' associations to look stupid/demanding, using words which undermine their work before and after fire: "barrage of complaints" "they pursued it obsessively" "dozens of other things they didn't like"
