Another reason why this matters: the prosecutor who just lost, Robert Tracci, joined a legal brief against then-Governor McAuliffe's executive order restoring voting rights.

Tracci is the 3rd prosecutor who joined that brief to lose this year, after 2 in the Dem primaries.
OH MY GOD, another prosecutor who joined the anti-McAuliffe lawsuit is up BY JUST 28 VOTES with all precincts reporting (in Orange County)

right now, all I'm thinking about are the roughly 140,000 people whose voting rights could be restored by a stroke of Andy Beshear's pen.
Beshear campaigned on a promise of restoring the right to vote to anyone who has completed a sentence after a nonviolent felony conviction. that'd cover about 140,000 people.

ABOUT 5 PERCENT OF THE STATE'S ADULT POPULATION.
BUT (this is important) Beshear excluding from his promise many who have completed their sentence (and others, but let's start with this) is a problem.

In 2018, Navajos won a majority of seats on the county commission of Native-majority San Juan County, Utah, for the 1st time, after a legal fight to make that possible. So white residents want to change local government again. Organized a referendum. #overlookedelectionstakes
Corey Stewart (the neo-Confederate GOPer in #VASen in 2018) has long been chair of board of Prince William Co. It's a large, blue-leaning county in NoVa, but Stewart has kept it closely tied to ICE, among other policies. He's retiring. Can Dems pick-up? #overlookedelectionstakes

❗️Louisiana judge said local prosecutors overincarcerate African Americans. Now, prosecutors want her removed from 300 cases; a court hearing is underway this week.

Context: Incarceration rate among black Louisianans is 4 times higher than among whites. usatoday.com/story/news/nat…
I should have led with the fact that this judge who prosecutors are trying to remove is an African American woman.
That's in keeping with similar efforts, & broader attacks by law enforcement against black women elected as DAs on reform agendas in recent years.

e.g. Aramis Ayala, who had cases removed, Kim Gardner, who faces efforts to remove her, and Kim Foxx, in Chicago where Trump in now.

10 years is an exceptionally long prison sentence. Even for the most egregious conduct. That’s all.
For anyone calling me “racist,” “sarcastic,” “cynical,” etc. for saying 10 years is a long time in prison even for this horrific murder, get to know my work. Values—decarceration & abolition among them—require consistency.
When we support pain, punishment, torture, harshness, long sentences for one-no matter how much we might despise them or think they "deserve it"-we further entrench an unjust system for all. “All” tends to be people I represent: Black & Latinx people from only certain communities

“i was gobsmacked to find out how many prisons we have,” says panel moderator cynthia neff.
noticeably not on the panel is current albemarle county commonwealth’s attorney robert tracci. instead, we have the man currently challenging him for that position this year, jim hingeley.
“there’s very little justice in the criminal justice system” for the black community, says diane mcneal from the NAACP. she instead calls it “the criminal punishment system.”
