Because the Civil Rights Movement relied on Christian principles, white evangelicals changed to a prosperity, power-based faith. Trump has been a member for a long time, a cult that preaches wealth and power, both systematically controlled by white supremacy, are crowned by God.
It’s an extension of the cult of American exceptionalism that preaches that a racist god favored white people over Native Americans and gave his blessing for genocide. This is what’s operating behind Trump now, and people need to know this is BEYOND dangerous.
People misunderstand this. This strand of evangelical faith isn’t about spirituality or morality, it’s strictly about power. Trump isn’t some aberration, he’s the embodiment of the continual contradiction of power-based evangelical faith. It’s a cult. A literal cult.
People get stuck on this because it calls itself Christianity, but it’s actually a sub-cult. I’ve taken to calling it the Cult of the Shining City, a cult that blends American myth with a myth of a racist, power-mad god, with elements of the occult supporting the story.
It took off with Reagan, an occult-hobbyist, partnering with the southern based Neo-Confederate evangelicals like Falwell, who steered the evangelical faith as far away from MLK and the Civil Rights movement as possible. What birthed was a nationalistic, white supremacy faith.
For generations this myth of mystical white supremacy has been hidden by American history and American narrative to justify unbelievable atrocities, racist power grabs, and so many of the crimes that led to our current crisis.
Again, for those late to the party, Donald Trump isn’t the disease. He’s a symptom. Anytime this moment seems irrational or unexplainable, look toward history, clear out preconceptions, and search for how we actually got here.
