Bulawayo power station the thread:The station has it's origins dating back to 1897. The first current being switched on , on 3rd November 1897 and full service introduced in 1898 with 100 customers connected. #Asakhe 
Byo was the 5th center in Sourthern Africa to have public electricity after Kimberly, Johhanesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town
The tender to generate electricity for Bulawayo was given to Napier, Weir and Clark of the Electric Light Company on 4th Feb 1895 and during the next 2yr equipment was brought up by ox - Wagon. On 17th August 1897 the 3 ceded the rights to Willoughby's Consolidated company
Willoughby ceded the rights to Bulawayo Waterworks company in Septembee 1897 and in September, 1899 the rights were acquired by the Municipality.The Byo city council purchased the water and electricity undertakings on 1st of July 1924 for £117 000.
Ultimately completion of the power station was in 1957 and the power station was producing 120MW.On April 11 1961 a deal was completed which saw the Byo power station feed into the Kariba grid
In 1968 city of Byo had 600 registered industries .By 1977 the city was supplying 50 000 customers
By 1977 there were plans to supply industry with gas.
One of the major industries was Premier Portland Cement wch produced its first cement in 1916.In 1963 it merged with Rhodesia Cement Company of Collen Bawn and traded as United Portland Cement.
With good supply of power, water and it's strategic location Bulawayo become the biggest industrial center of the country.
Bulawayobbecame a produce of radios and Tvs, rail wagons,electric stoves, different foods stuffs and many other products
It is important to note that Byo'a biggest industries were home grown eg Treger, Conolly& Company, Super Sonic Radio manufacturing and many others
