Really interesting. Has anyone studied what happened to Hacker News after they turned off public upvote counts several years ago?
My vague recollection is that I stopped checking Hacker News around that time. Maybe engagement stats show that?

Rank ordering of comments was preserved, but you had to spend a lot of time on HN to go more than a few comments deep.
