After the police stood down, CUHK is busy digging in. There are thousands of people out, preparing for whatever comes next. It feels like a besieged fort ahead of the next assault. The coordination is amazing. Barricades are thickening by the minute. Bricks are being dug up.
Human chains stretch across the entirety of the campus. Some supplies come in by motorcycle through barricades. Others are being foraged from buildings and walkways. Meanwhile everywhere students and alums are resting and refueling with instant noodles.
Outside the gate by Ma Liu Shui, now fortified by layer after layer of barricade, some ready with tinder and Molotov cocktails, people mill about. A projector was set up to broadcast live feeds so people can track what’s happening.
For kindling in the barricades tires are being wheeled in.
At one of the barricades a sort of border had been set up. People’s id’s are checked as they come in, but not as they go out (a sort of US customs set up). A few spears are planted in the metal gates as well.
Students crouched along the walls of the barricades are making a lot of Molotov cocktails. They leave boxes and bottles here and there ready for if the police come this way.
Inside organizers amass supplies, joke in small clusters, or sleep. The tranquility of the campus, which rises along a jungle covered mountain and is now filled with the sounds of insects, contrasts sharply with the shots from earlier in the night, and probably what’s to come
And signs of the fight that has already happened: Burned out vehicles, alarms going off, a fire at the University subway, and protest art in tatters.

The students of one of HK’s top colleges are using all their wits and knowledge to defend themselves against their own police.
