Next panel: Research without borders: funding agency case studies on international collaboration.

Claire Hemingway: @NSF funds fundamental science and STEM education. NSF doesn't have static international offices
#CSPC2019
Next panelist is Chloé Somers of @UKRI_NorthAmer. There are 9 different UK funding agencies but only a single external access point org, UKRI
#CSPF2019
.@jclemay4 is the next panelist working at @Quebec_UK to develop a deep network to connect Quebec researchers, centres to foster int'l research activity #CSPC2019
Next panelist, Jennifer Decker from @NRC_CNRC. In addition to housing nearly 4000 researchers, they fund ST&I through the IRAP program.

Internationally, they use their extensive network to connects SMEs & researchers to solve global research challenges

Now it's time to get to work! @MonicaGattinger's first question: opportunities and challenges! Go!

Why international research? Access the best of the best (people, infrastructure), share in the training of HQP. #CSPC2019
Ex) Quantum is a national priority for the US. This hot topic aligns well with @NSF international priorities.
It's strategic to leverage national and international foci. #CSPC2019
Challenges: alignment of top-down with bottom-up research priorities. How to coordinate national, int'l funding agencies ... Especially in fast moving fields
#CSPC2019
Capacity building: not necessarily just in the research field, but at funding agency headquarters. Internal expertise to develop relationships home and abroad.

Relationships: these things take time
#CSPC2019
Claire Hemingway: researchers are already working internationally. Funding agencies are playing catch-up.
#CSPC2019
Sustainability in funding mechanisms is key. (true whether that be for national or international research)
#CSPF2019
Question from the angle of the researcher: there's an incorrect assumption, "grant writing is free." These grants take time.

Related, do these grants go moreso to the prepared PIs? Lots of money to the same individuals?
