Excited to represent @CAPhys in important discussions on fundamental research in 🇨🇦 and the training of researchers #cdnsci Opening slide of Canadian Consortium of Research's Summit for Science and Researchers
Added bonus, taking it all in with my talented @MitacsCanada science policy fellowship colleagues from, all who've rocked the transition from PhD to government 👌#CSPF
The day's keynote: @cdavidnaylor on the importance, especially now, of increasing in scholarly inquiry.
Canada... The classic problem of innovation and investing in Research... BERD (business investments in R&D) low compared to other countries.

Even Gross Domestic R&D expenditures... We are alone internationally on forcing universities to majorly fund research
It's not a bragging point to say Canada has the highest HERD (higher ed R&D) internationally. That does not mean a lot of research $$ available. #cdnsci
So how do Canadian researchers collaborate? Not well with other Canadian institutions.
Canadian Research Coordinating Committee: the answer to coherence across funding agencies. All in all, fairly close to actual recommendations
The Council for Science and Innovation... Carefully watch who will make up such a committee. Huge room for conflicts of interest. #cdnsci
Infrastructure: an important funding issue for many physicists... Goal: stabilise. Result: ~
Now to the CRC program... Only $50M, not the $140M minimum needed to refresh this important program for principal investigators... Especially for #ECR
Summary on the future of Canadian research: glass half full.

Exception: risk to next generation.

Training the next generation... Let's go!

Are we training them to take advantage of the myriad of #altac opportunities?
Are we educating (students, employers, professors, government) appropriately for this reality?
FSWEP - Federal Student Work Employment Program 🇨🇦... Can be used with Masters and PhD students.... An opportunity for #AltAc training
Next session: "Impacts and outcomes in academia and science: are we communicating what matters?"

What of these performance indicators? From the H in the h-index himself:
