afaict it also doesn't go into the biggest reason that the snake oil AI stuff sells so effectively, which is that people deeply WANT to believe that "robots" or "AI" can do these things
your "AI" can straight up just BE a manual scoring algorithm or whatever and you can call it an AI and people will believe it more than if you tell them what it is. they might even call it an AI on their own if they don't know how it works
people want to believe in AI the same way they want to believe in ghosts or god or astrology or whatever
you can create a really basic madlib style twitter bot and constantly tell everyone how it works and people will still go "amazing what markov bots can do these days" or whatever
yeah remember that snack delivery company that uses little robots and they were all piloted by low wage workers in Colombia? if you pretend they're "just robots" you don't have to consider the possibility of exploitation
